Lynne Lomofsky was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1960, and lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. Her career spans more than four decades and two continents, marked by a sustained and searching engagement with the body, illness, memory, and the natural world.

Lomofsky trained extensively in the arts, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Cape Town (1980), a National Diploma in Fine Art, majoring in painting, from the former Cape Technikon (1983), and a Master of Fine Art in painting from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT (2004). She later returned to Michaelis as a teacher, serving as a substitute lecturer in painting in 2005, and as a part-time painting lecturer from 2006 to 2009 – alongside decades of teaching across primary, high school, technikons, and adult education settings, including the Peter Clarke Art Centre in Cape Town.

Between 1990 and 1995, Lomofsky lived and worked in Toronto, Canada, where she ran Blistering Barnacles, a textile design, printing and craft business, and exhibited widely – including at the Museum for Textiles, the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, and Fibreworks at the Cambridge Library and Gallery. Her textile work earned her an Ontario Craft Council Award, Best of Show in Textiles at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, and a National Arts Council of Canada grant, along with a studio residency at Harbourfront Centres Craft & Design Studios.

Since returning to South Africa, Lomofsky has built a substantial body of solo and group exhibitions. Her solo shows include Stilled Lives (6 Spin Street Gallery, Cape Town, 2023); a trilogy of gouache-on-paper exhibitions – Just What They Are (2018), You Made Me Look (2016), and Be Careful How You Look (2013), all at 6 Spin Street Gallery; Patient Copy (AVA Gallery, Cape Town, 2009); Body of Evidence (AVA Gallery, Cape Town, and KZNSA Gallery, Durban, 2003); and Cancer Ward LE:32 (Mau Mau Gallery, Cape Town, 1997, and Rembrandt van Rijn Gallery, Johannesburg, 1998). This last body of work, growing from her own experience with cancer, marked a turning point in her practice – using self-portraiture to confront the vulnerability of the ill body and order the disparate, chaotic experience of illness.

Her group exhibitions include Three Friends at 6 Spin Street Gallery (2025); Home is Where the Art Is at Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town (2021); the Summer Salon at Nel Gallery, Cape Town (2021–2023); Art Under the Bed, Cape Town (2021–2025);Art on Paper at Kalk Bay Modern (2024-2026; Anatomy of Loss at the Upstairs Gallery, Michaelis School of Fine Art (2022), and A Decade of Democracy, Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town (2004).

Lomofsky’s work is held in several notable collections, including UCT Medical School, Iziko South African National Gallery, the Jack Ginsburg Artist Book Collection in Johannesburg, and Nando’s Southern African Art Collection. Her academic and artistic achievements have been recognised with several awards and grants, including the Jules Kramer Scholarship, NRF Student Grant for her MFA studies, and an NAC Exhibition Grant.
